Level 3 Foundation Diploma/Extended Diploma Sport
Full time course
This qualification which is equivalent to two A-levels and is designed to give learners the skills, knowledge and experience needed to improve physiologically and psychologically. Learners will gain in-depth knowledge of the mechanisms behind sport and how to improve performance.
What will I study?
Modules covered may include the principles of anatomy and physiology, fitness training and programming, professional development and may include sports leadership, psychology and practical sports performance.
Learners on this course will undertake a minimum of 36 hours work experience with local organisations in the delivery of sporting opportunities, in order to experience real-life delivery to groups of participants.
What do I need to join?
Applicants must have studied at GCSE level and achieved 5 grade 4 (grade C) GCSEs or above, inclusive of Maths, English Language, Science and PE, as well as demonstrating (at interview and a College Taster day) an enthusiasm for the industry in addition to an interest in sport and/or coaching and a keen motivation to learn.

How will I learn?
Sessions will be a mixture of theory and practical lessons, and, wherever possible, underpinning theory will also be demonstrated in a practical context. There will be a variety of assessment methods used (such as written assessments, observations, presentations and discussions), and learners will gain a thorough understanding of the evidence they are expected to produce.
How will I know how I am doing?
Learners will be assigned a personal tutor, who, alongside other delivery staff on the programme, will monitor progress on the course in relation to work submission, attendance, behaviour and punctuality as well as progress against a learner's individual targets.
Are there any extra costs?
Learners will be charged a materials fee, which will be used to purchase resources for the learners to use on the course, to facilitate educational study visits and to support the learning taking place.
What can I do next?
This qualification prepares you for study on one of our higher education degree programmes at SGS or, alternatively you may apply to other higher education institutions. You could also enter employment in the sport, leisure and recreation industry or apply for an apprenticeship.
