Summary
This general Level 3 sports programme is designed to give you an insight into all areas of the sporting industry, allowing you to see 18 topic areas over the 2 years of study. The course is aimed at giving you a real flavour of the sporting world, whilst providing you with key insights into your next steps.
This 2-year course has been tailored to give learners an opportunity to progress onto degree programmes in Sport or employment in the sporting industry. This is a full-time course.

- Anatomy and Physiology
- Technical & Tactical Skills in Sport
- Practical Team Sport
- Sports Nutrition
- Psychology
- Fitness Testing
- Sports Coaching
- Physiology of Fitness
- Sports Analysis
Qualification Size and UCAS Points
This NCFE qualification is equivalent to 3 A Levels, giving the learner the opportunity to achieve a maximum of 168 UCAS points.
How do the Sports Academies work alongside this course?
Learners are able to access Sports Academies whilst studying at SGS College on a full-time course. Your academic studies and academy training work as a partnership, and as such, are never timetabled at the same time. This allows you to continue your development within your selected sporting discipline, whilst studying in an academic area that interests you. For example, a learner may have lectures on a Monday morning and then Academy training at WISE on a Monday afternoon.
It is not compulsory to be in an Academy to study a Sports qualification at SGS College.What do I need to join?
Applicants will hold a total of 5 GCSE grade 4’s, including English and maths.
How will I learn?
This Level 3 course is based at our dynamic and exciting WISE Campus, located within easy reach of the city of Bristol and moments away from Bristol Parkway and Filton Abbey Wood train stations.
This programme is 100% coursework based. We assess learners using a number of different methods, allowing learners to enhance these types of skills holistically throughout the course. The types of assessment methods range from writing reports and creating posters, through to delivering practical sessions and formal presentations.
How will I know how I am doing?
Learners are given regular feedback to support their understanding of the subject’s topic areas, whilst also receiving feedback to aid the continued development of their numeracy and literacy skills.
Maths & English
Although no additional English and maths qualifications will be taken during this course, we aim to embed these essential skills into all our lectures, giving learners the opportunity to further evolve and develop these important attributes.
Employability
Possible careers and salaries upon completion include:
- Sports Coach - £18,000 to £35,000 depending upon experience and qualifications held
- Sports Development Officer - £21,000 to £50,000 depending upon experience
Possible careers and salaries (after completion of Higher Education courses) include:
- Sports Psychologist - £20,000 to £48,000 depending upon experience
- PE Teacher - £17,000 to £40,490 depending upon experience

Work Experience
Every learner at SGS College is tasked with achieving a number of work experience hours during the academic year. We suggest the learner starts to consider their work experience placement at the earliest opportunity.
The work experience element of the course is imperative as it provides the learner with vital insight into possible roles within the industry. Each of our courses has a high amount of employer engagement, with the aim to expose the learner to possible destinations once the qualification has been completed. Is it these experiences and engagements that allow our learners to develop holistically and to become industry ready.
What can I do next?
A high majority of our learner’s progress onto Higher Education sports programmes or gain employment in the sports industry. Following the successful completion of this qualification, learners could also apply for L4 apprenticeships in the related field.
Employment options after achievement can range from becoming a sports coach, to becoming involved in sports psychology or sports analysis, once degree level qualifications have been completed in these relevant fields. Learners may also consider starting specific coaching qualifications with National Governing Bodies upon completion of this course.
