About the course

The Level 2 Animal Care programme provides an introductory overview of essential principles, knowledge, understanding, and skills relevant to the animal care sector. This field is a crucial part of the land-based industry and plays an important role in the UK economy.

Course Content
You will study topics such as animal health, husbandry, behaviour and animal accommodation. The goal of this qualification is to inspire and motivate you to pursue a career in the animal care sector, while also providing the opportunity to gain a broad understanding and develop essential skills in this field.
Employability
We aim to provide you with the skills required to be able to progress into further study and training or employment upon completion of your programme of study. Key attributes required by employers are that individuals be enthusiastic, motivated, presentable (in some instances in company uniform), organised, articulate, able to think 'outside the box', business-like and enterprising, and that they have a 'can-do' attitude. We work on all these areas throughout the duration of your programme of study, and your tutor(s) will provide feedback on progress made, as well as areas for development.
What do I need to join
In addition to a strong interest in animal care, you need to have at least a GCSE grade 3 in both English and Maths. It’s important to be committed, punctual and enthusiastic about learning and adopting new ideas and skills. A solid understanding and application of knowledge in English and Maths is essential for future progression and employment. Learners will also take GCSE English and Maths as part of their overall programme, aiming to achieve a grade 4 in both subjects.
What can I do next
Upon successfully completing this course, you can progress to a Level 3 course in a related discipline or choose an apprenticeship to gain practical experience and further develop your skills. Potential employment opportunities include working in kennels, catteries, pet stores, wildlife parks, dog grooming salons and zoological collections. We encourage all learners to seek additional voluntary work in these areas alongside their placements, as this can provide greater opportunities for employment after finishing the course
