Summary
Raku is an elemental and magical firing process with beautiful and unique results. Red-hot pots are transferred from the kiln to reduction buckets where they are smoked and and the glazes transformed as the oxygen is consumed, developing the characteristic but unpredictable Raku crackles and lustres. The immediacy of the process means that your pots are glazed, fired and cooled in around a couple of hours! The course is suitable for those with a basic understanding of ceramics upwards and want to learn about the Raku process. This five day course will include two days for making new work, using clays and techniques specifically designed for the firing, a day for glazing and two days of firing fun! Course leader Phil Root will also talk about alternative low firing methods he is developing for these types of kiln and how they may contribute to more sustainable ways of firing.
How will I learn?
Through hands on lessons and creative demonstrations in sessions. You will be supported by the tutor in creating your own ideas and provided ideas to follow and adapt.
Entry Requirements
There are no specific entry requirements for this course. However, some previous experience with ceramics would be beneficial.

Course fees explained
The course fee is usually broken down into three components which are materials (resources required to study the course, for example stationery, books and other equipment), tuition (teaching, classroom etc) and exams. Depending on age, financial circumstances and a number of other factors, you could be asked to pay the full fee or just elements of it. Usually Learners under 19 studying Full-Time courses have just material fees, and if relevant, Academy fees, to pay. Over 19s on Full-Time or Part-Time courses usually have materials, exams and tuition fees to pay.
