Summary
The Access to Engineering pathway is a highly regarded full Level 3 course for learners who wish to apply to university to study engineering-based degree courses and to pursue engineering career paths in areas such as mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, chemical engineering, and many other engineering routes. This one-year course is taught in a blended learning model with two days in college and one day online. The course is for mature students returning to education (19+), or those wishing to pursue a different career route. A range of Academic Subject Content units are delivered in maths, chemistry, and physics. Learners also undertake a range of Study Skills units.
How will I learn?
The course consists of 60 credits: 45 Academic Subject Content (ASC) credits graded at pass, merit, and distinction, and 15 Study Skills credits. You will be set assignments to gain these credits throughout the academic year. These will involve essay writing, tests/exams, some practical experiments with written reports and presentations.
Entry Requirements
Essential: GCSE English Language - C/4 or above or international equivalent Essential: GCSE Maths - B/5 or above or international equivalent Beneficial: GCSE Sciences - C/4 or above or international equivalent As well as the above Academic criteria all applicants are required to sit an assessment in college, which will ask you to demonstrate your understanding of physics, chemistry and maths. The assessment is used to ensure that this is the right course for you. Please book your assessment when you complete your application form. You will not be offered a place on the course without completing the assessment. Academic and employment progression opportunities with Access to Engineering are wide ranging, including mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, aerospace engineering, and many other engineering routes. The Advanced Learner Loan is available for most 19+ applicants dependent on your nationality/residency status - please check www.gov.uk/advanced-learner-loan for more information. The loan covers the full cost of the course, and if you go on to complete any university-level course, the loan is written off, meaning you pay nothing for your Access diploma.
