Covid Update

On Tuesday 29 March, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Sajid Javid, set out the next steps for living with COVID-19 in England from Friday 1 April.

Updated guidance advises:

  • Adults with the symptoms of a respiratory infection, and who have a high temperature or feel unwell, should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people until they feel well enough to resume normal activities and no longer have a high temperature.
  • Children and young people who are unwell and have a high temperature should stay at home and avoid contact with other people. They can return to college when they no longer have a high temperature, and are well enough to attend.
  • Adults with a positive COVID-19 test result should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people for 5 days, which is when they are most infectious. For children and young people aged 18 and under, the advice is 3 days.

For education and childcare settings from Friday 1 April:

  • Regular asymptomatic testing is no longer recommended in any education or childcare setting, including in SEND, alternative provision and children’s social care settings. Therefore, we will no longer be able to order test kits .

Summary

This programme has been designed for learners who have a keen interest in Esports, but need to retake English and maths and gain a grade 4 in these subject areas. The programme has 2 levels; the first of which is an Award option, where learners might require 2 years to progress to our L3 provision, and the second pathway is a Diploma option, designed for learners who are hoping to make the step to L3 in one year.

Entry requirements for this pathway are grade 2 or above in both English and maths.

We will use baseline assessments during the induction phase to ensure the learner is on the correct pathway and ensure we keep parents and guardians informed of our decisions during this time.

The programme encompasses a wide range of transferable skills, enabling you to not only experience different areas of the Esports sector, but other associated sectors, aiding the progression into our L3 provision, and then into employment or Higher Education.

The course will include units such as:

  • Esports Games, Teams and Tournaments
  • Establishing an Esports Organisation
  • Streaming for Esports
  • Plan for an Esports Event
  • Start an Enterprise in Esports
  • Positive Health and Well-being in Esports

Esports Academy
All learners on the Esports programme will have the opportunity to be apart of our SGS Esports Academy, FirstShot. The Esports Academy will provide opportunities for learners to receive high level Esports coaching, participate in inter-college competitions and compete in both the AOC and British Esports competitions and leagues. National competitions will be played from the gaming hub in the SGS Brunel Centre and you will compete within the following games titles:

  • Overwatch
  • League of Legends
  • Rocket League
  • Valorant

This Level 1/Level 2 course is based at our dynamic and exciting WISE Campus, located within easy reach of the City of Bristol and moments away from Bristol Parkway and Filton Abbey Wood train stations.

How will I know how I am doing?

A variety of assessment methods will be used to measure your progress, tracked against your expected grade and target grade. These may include practical tasks and assessments, written assignments, performance reviews, presentations and discussions, all of which will be submitted online. Learners are given regular feedback to support their understanding of the subject’s topic areas, whilst also receiving feedback to aid the continued development of their numeracy and literacy skills.

How will I learn?

This programme is 100% coursework based. We assess learners using a number of different methods, allowing learners to enhance these types of skills holistically throughout the course. The types of assessment methods range from writing reports and creating a brand, through to delivering practical sessions and formal presentations.

Maths & English

A key requirement for future progression and employment is a good understanding and application of knowledge and skills in both English and maths.

You must have GCSEs at grade 2 or above, in both English and maths for this pathway option. English and maths skills will also be developed holistically within the core programme through a range of activities such as data analysis.

Depending upon the learners entry qualifications, this pathway will have Functional Skills or GCSE embedded into the timetable. If a learner has a grade 2 in English or maths, they will be placed on a Functional Skills retake, whereas if a learner has a grade 3 in English or maths, they will be placed on a GCSE retake.
