Access to Higher Education - Science Pathway

Full time course

Summary

The Access to Science course is aimed at adults who are interested in studying a range of science- related disciplines at university but who don't have the necessary qualifications to gain entry into higher education. The course will provide subject knowledge and help to develop students' confidence and study skills, as well as opening up new career possibilities. The course is especially designed for adults who have had a break from studying and is accepted by universities as an alternative to A Levels.

What will I study?

The course consists of core modules in biology, chemistry and physics. Alongside your main academic subjects, you will also receive training on important study skills, such as revision skills, exam techniques, ICT and essay writing.

How long is the course?

1 year full-time (approximately 4 days per week). Classes will be timetabled wherever possible between 10.00 am and 4.00 pm to take into account childcare issues and employment.

How will I learn?

The sessions are varied and include tutor led lectures, discussions, independent research, internal examinations and group work. There are a range of assessment methods used throughout the year, such as essays, laboratory practicals, presentations, reports and tests.

What do I need to join?

You will need two GCSEs at grade 5 in English and maths, and will need to sit an entrance test. Specialist pathways may require higher grades: these will be discussed as part

of your interview for the course..

How will I know how I am doing?

Assessment is continuous and consisting of coursework, exam performance, portfolio building and regular one-to-one time with a personal tutor.

Tuition Fees

Between the ages of 16-18 you do not need to pay tuition or exam fees for your course. If you are between the ages of 19 and 23 and have not achieved a full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification before, you will not need to pay tuition, exam or material fees using the Level 2 or 3 Entitlement. If you are aged 19 or over, studying a Level 3-6 and a Level 3 Entitlement does not apply, you will need to pay the full cost of the course.
