What will I study?

Learners on this programme will follow a study programme that includes:

  • Delivering basic animal treatments
  • Maintaining animal accommodation
  • Companion animal anatomy and physiology.

Learners must pass the mandatory Biology multiple choice question paper in order to be accepted on the course.

Maths and English

A key requirement to obtaining many jobs is achieving a good standard of English and Maths, therefore learners that do not yet have a GCSE grade 4 (grade C) will be enrolled on either GCSE or Functional Skills programmes alongside their course.

What do I need to join?

You need to have two GCSEs at grade 4 (grade C) in English and science.

How long is the course?

1 year.

How will I learn?

Lessons will be a mixture of theory and practical; the practical sessions include work within our own on-site animal collection. Achievement is through completion of a portfolio and students also complete a mandatory multiple-choice examination for one of the units.

How will I know how I am doing?

Learners will discuss their own SMART targets with their personal tutor and these will then be specifically designed to enabe learners to progress to other courses. In order to review progress, learners will meet regularly with their personal tutor and feedback on assessments will be provided by teaching staff.

Are there any extra costs?

Learners will be charged materials fees, which will be used to purchase resources for the learners to use on the course (inclusive of PPE), to facilitate educational study visits and to support the learning taking place.

What can I do next?

Learners will be challenged to progress to further Level 3 (A-level equivalent) courses after successful completion of this course.

What are my career options?

Veterinary Nursing Assistant; Animal Rescue Centre Nursing Assistants; Kennel Assistants.
