Course Detail

A Level Geography

Full time course

Summary

You will study many aspects of the natural and human environment including contemporary issues, natural hazards, such as flood events, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and hurricanes and our expanding population. You will also study the globalisation of economics and its major impact on our daily lives, such as world energy and food production. As geography is such a broad subject, it opens many doors and will prepare you for a wide variety of courses at university, including traditional human and physical geography, through to courses such as environmental science, climate change, marine biology, oceanography and seismic exploration.

What will I study?

Year 1: Rivers, floods and management; cold environments, coastal environments and hot desert environments and their margins; global population change; food supply issues, energy issues and health issues; basic, investigative, ICT, graphical, cartographical and statistical skills; research skills and fieldwork. Year 2: Plate tectonics and associated hazards; weather and climate and associated hazards; investigation of a geographical argument, assertion, hypothesis, issue or problem; the process of issue evaluation.

What do I need to join?

To join the full time A Level Programme you need at least 5 full GCSEs grades 9–5 (A*–C), including English Language and Maths.
In addition for A Level Geography you need a grade 9-5 in GCSE Geography or a Humanities subject as well as an awareness of global contemporary issues.

How long is the course?

2 years.

How will I learn?

You will learn through formal teaching, discussions, case studies and the investigations of local issues. You will take part in a variety of field trips to support and extend your learning (local rivers, coastal studies, e.g. Iceland). Fieldwork and research skills are a key feature of the course.

How will I know how I am doing?

The course is assessed through examinations and an independent field work report.

What are my career options?

The careers possible are too numerous to mention, but include Meteorologist, Hydrologist, Volcanologist, Geologist, Geophysicist, 'Storm Chaser', Surveyor and Town Planner.

Are there any extra costs?

You may be expected to purchase a text book.

What can I do next?
