Level 3 Painting & Decorating

Full time course


Students will be working in a modern workshop environment and will be learning practical decorating skills, including erecting and dismantling access equipment and working platforms, preparing surfaces for decoration, applying paintsystems by brush and roller, applying foundation and plain papers, producing specialist decorative finishes, applying and creating colour. Theory classes will include knowledge of a range of finishes, health and safety as well as other knowledge relating to the practical aspects of the trade.

 Maths and English

Leaners who have not achieved grade 4 (grade C) or above in Maths and English will be given additional support to improve these skills.

Work experience

All courses include opportunities for learners to experience working in a construction environment– this may be with employers, a community project or a project with in the college campus. This gives learners the opportunity to develop their skills in their chosen trade and will assist with progression choices.


In conjunction with obtaining a trade qualification and practical experience, learners will also develop other skills, such as interview techniques and CV preparation, to prepare them for the world of work.

What do I need to join?

Candidates will ideally have completed the Level 2 Diploma or can demonstrate knowledge of the trade and complete a skills assessment.

How long is the course?

1 year, with attendance required of 2.5 days a week, which includes Maths, English, enrichment, work experience and tutorial days, to further support you in your chosen career within the industry.

How will I learn?

Practical experience will be gained in the workshop, through practical activities. Underpinning knowledge will be delivered in the classroom and IT suite, where study will be interactive and informative.

How will I know how I am doing?

Targets will be set and agreed with your tutor; you will receive regular feedback and one-to-one reviews to ensure that you are on track to achieve your goals. Your practical work will also be assessed by your tutor and your portfolio will be assessed by our internal verification team. Parents can also monitor progress through the Pro Monitor portal.

What can I do next?

NVQ Level 3/Employment.

What are my career options?

There are many different specialist roles within the industry. Employers will be looking for a minimum of level 2 NVQ or an apprenticeship at an equivalent level. This course provides an excellent foundation upon which to build a career within the construction industry.

Tuition Fees

Between the ages of 16-18 you do not need to pay tuition or exam fees for your course. If you are between the ages of 19 and 23 and have not achieved a full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification before, you will not need to pay tuition, exam or material fees using the Level 2 or 3 Entitlement. If you are aged 19 or over, studying a Level 3-6 and a Level 3 Entitlement does not apply, you will need to pay the full cost of the course. You may be eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan to help with the fees. Please contact the College directly for the most up to date fees – these may be subject to change.
