About the course

This one-year course provides learners with an interest in art and design with the opportunity to explore the materials, methods and processes that support art and design activities and to begin to develop some related technical skills.

Throughout the programme, you’ll be encouraged to explore and experiment with a wide range of art, design and photography techniques. Research, idea generation and reflection are integral to the process, allowing you to respond meaningfully to projects and develop as an artist and designer.

Course content

The course content includes a variety of projects that explore diverse creative disciplines such as drawing, animation, 3D crafts, fashion design, photography, digital art, printmaking, and painting. Throughout the year, students will create 2D, 3D, and time-based work, developing a broad skill set across different mediums.

The programme culminates in a final major project during the summer term, giving you the opportunity to apply your skills with greater autonomy.

Maths & English
A key requirement for future progression and employment is a good understanding and application of knowledge and skills in both English and maths. Learners who are enrolled on this course will also, as part of their overall programme of study, be enrolled on GCSE English and Maths in order to progress towards gaining GCSE grade 4 in both subjects.
What do I need to join
As well as having a keen interest in the subject area, learners will need to possess 4 x GCSE grade 3 or above, ideally one of those to be in English or Maths, but not essential. Learners will need to be committed, punctual and demonstrate an enthusiasm for learning and taking on new ideas and skills. Ideally, learners will have completed a relevant Level 1 qualification. As this is a creative course, we would also like to see a portfolio of creative work at your interview.
What can I do next

Upon completing this course, you will have diverse and flexible progression options, including the opportunity to study a range of Level 3 programmes in Fine Art, Design & Communication, Photography, Film & Media, Make-up Artistry, Games Design and Music.

After completing further programmes at Level 3 and beyond, you could work in a wide variety of creative fields. You may work freelance or perhaps as part of a studio or professional organisation. You could be a painter, an illustrator, a photographer, a sculptor, a fashion or textiles designer, an interior designer, a ceramist, a filmmaker or animator, a printmaker, a designer, an architect, a game artist or something else creative altogether. Alternatively, you might pursue a career in teaching, art therapy or curation.

With endless possibilities in the creative sector, this course provides the foundation to explore and succeed in a variety of roles within the arts and design industries.
