About the course

This eight week evening class is an exciting opportunity to build your drawing and painting skills with a focus on still-life. Jack will guide you through foundational drawing techniques and help you translate them into paintings. Working from different still-life compositions and various media and approaches , you will learn how the genre has evolved through history from early modernism to its relevance in contemporary culture.

This course is for all abilities from beginners to those who want to build their portfolio in preparation for further study.

Course content

This course is divided into two focused parts:

Part 1: Drawing Still Life
You will begin with the fundamental techniques of drawing from observation, learning to effectively render form, scale, and proportion. Through guided practice, you’ll experiment with a variety of mark-making methods to convey texture and tone.

Part 2: Developing Drawings into Paintings
Building on your drawings, you’ll transition into painting, exploring mediums such as oils and watercolours. You’ll learn essential skills such as colour mixing, layering, and brushwork to create dynamic and expressive compositions. Additionally, the course includes a study of historical and contemporary artists who have mastered the still-life genre, providing inspiration for your own creative journey.

By the end of the course, you’ll have developed a range of technical skills and produced your own collection of still-life works, gaining confidence in both drawing and painting.

What do I need to join
This course is for all abilities from beginners to those who want to build their portfolio in preparation for further study. Applicants must be at least 19 years of age at the start of the academic year, to attend this course.
