About the course

This 10-week course will give you access to expert support from tutor Gina Baum. You will be able to use equipment and resources (electric and gas kilns, wheels, slab roller, wall mounted extruder) to practice, improve and consolidate your skills (hand building, throwing, sculpture, slip decorating, glazing) or to ask for help learning new skills. You will have prior knowledge and experience of ceramics and may be enrolled on another SGS Stroud ceramics course. You should have several ideas or projects in mind and ideally have a sketchbook, images or inspirational objects to help your design and planning process.

How is the course delivered and assessed?
Prior ceramics experience is necessary for this course. It is recommended that you have completed at least one term in the Introduction to Ceramics course or have equivalent experience. Please come prepared by bringing a protective shirt to wear during studio sessions. Additionally, remember to bring a notebook and pen to record your ideas and technical details. It is also beneficial to bring inspirational materials such as photos and examples of your previous work to fuel your creativity. There will be an opportunity to be involved with the end of year show at SGS Stroud including curating and showing of work. Applicants must be at least 19 years of age at the start of the academic year, to attend this course.
About the tutor
Gina Baum is a Ceramic artists based in Stroud. She creates unique porcelain sculptures developed from experimenting with hand building techniques and reclaimed ceramics. Her work is exhibited throughout the UK and is represented by Hone Gallery in London. Gina has taught Ceramics and Wellbeing courses at SGS Stroud since 2021. Gina completed a Foundation in Art and Design in 2013 at SGS Stroud, a BA in Drawing and Applied Arts in 2017 at University West of England, Bristol and a MA in 2019 at the Royal College of Art in London. She enjoys sharing her knowledge, skills and enthusiasm for Ceramics with everyone.
What do I need to join (Entry Requirements)
Prior ceramics experience is necessary for this course. It is recommended that you have completed at least one term in the Introduction to Ceramics course or have equivalent experience.

Additional information
In addition to the course fee, learners will also be charged a separate weigh and pay fee, for the items that they make. This fee covers the use of the kiln and is based on the weight of the item(s) that have been made during the course. This cost varies from a few pounds to a £100 plus. Below is the current charges for the different clays used: Specialist Clays (Porcelain, Paper-Clay, Black clays) = £7 per Kg Utility Clays (Smooth White S/W, St Thomas S/W, Crank, White E/W, Red E/W) = £6 per Kg Lustre: Will incur and addition cost of £2 per piece of work. A more detailed breakdown can be supplied on request.
