About the course

If you are considering setting up your own home ceramic studio, this two-part course at our Stroud Campus will provide the essential knowledge and practical guidance you need. Taught by experienced ceramic artist and technician Gina Baum, you will explore everything from the basics of studio setup to the technical skills required for successful kiln use, glaze preparation, and safe studio practice.

Course content

Part One: 11/10/2025

You will be introduced to the general basics of creating and managing a home ceramic studio. Gina will guide you through essential considerations, equipment, and studio planning, ensuring you have a clear foundation before moving on to more advanced techniques.

Part Two: 24/01/2026
Building on Part One, this session will cover more in-depth studio practices, including:

  • Programming kiln controllers

  • Kiln furniture care and making bespoke kiln furniture

  • Using pyrometric cones

  • Correct filling of kilns (bisque and glaze firings)

  • Avoiding common studio mistakes

  • Mixing and storing glazes

  • Slip recipes and slip preparation

It is recommended to attend both sessions to gain the most from the course, but you may attend either part individually.

How is the course delivered and assessed?
Both courses are delivered face-to-face in a workshop environment at Stroud Campus. Each session will include tutor demonstrations, practical discussions, and opportunities to ask questions tailored to your studio plans. There is no formal assessment - these courses are designed to build your confidence and prepare you with practical knowledge for setting up your studio.
About the tutor
Gina Baum is a Ceramic artists based in Stroud. She creates unique porcelain sculptures developed from experimenting with hand building techniques and reclaimed ceramics. Her work is exhibited throughout the UK and is represented by Hone Gallery in London. Gina has taught Ceramics and Wellbeing courses at SGS Stroud since 2021. Gina completed a Foundation in Art and Design in 2013 at SGS Stroud, a BA in Drawing and Applied Arts in 2017 at University West of England, Bristol and a MA in 2019 at the Royal College of Art in London. She enjoys sharing her knowledge, skills and enthusiasm for Ceramics with everyone.
What do I need to join (Entry Requirements)
There are no formal entry requirements. This course is suitable for anyone with an interest in ceramics, from hobbyists to aspiring professionals, who would like to set up their own home studio.
