About the course
Discover the joy of working with clay in this hands-on UAL Level 1 Ceramics course, designed to introduce you to essential ceramic techniques and creative processes. Whether you're a complete beginner or looking to build your confidence in a studio setting, this course offers a supportive, structured pathway into ceramic art. Under the expert guidance of ceramic artist Gina Baum, you will learn how to shape, build, and develop your own ceramic pieces - from concept to finished artwork.
Course content
You will learn the foundational skills in ceramics, including:
- Research and idea development for ceramics
- Design planning using sketchbooks and journals
- Exploring hand-building and surface decoration techniques
- Practice through test tiles and experimental samples
- Creating a final ceramic project based on your own design
Each session will involve both practical skills and reflection, helping you understand your creative development and how to bring your ideas to life in clay.
How is the course delivered and assessed?
This course is taught in a fully equipped ceramics studio through a mix of demonstrations, hands-on practice, and one-to-one support. You will be assessed through:

This UAL-accredited course encourages self-reflection and development of personal creative voice in line with Level 1 learning outcomes.
About the tutor
Gina Baum is a Ceramic artists based in Stroud. She creates unique porcelain sculptures developed from experimenting with hand building techniques and reclaimed ceramics. Her work is exhibited throughout the UK and is represented by Hone Gallery in London. Gina has taught Ceramics and Wellbeing courses at SGS Stroud since 2021. Gina completed a Foundation in Art and Design in 2013 at SGS Stroud, a BA in Drawing and Applied Arts in 2017 at University West of England, Bristol and a MA in 2019 at the Royal College of Art in London. She enjoys sharing her knowledge, skills and enthusiasm for Ceramics with everyone.
What do I need to join
You must be aged 19 or over at the start of the academic year. No prior ceramics experience is required—just an interest in learning, experimenting, and creating.
Additional information
Your course fee includes high-quality materials, such as clay for test pieces, a sketchbook, and tools. For larger-scale work, you may be asked to contribute a small additional fee for extra clay, which can be discussed with your tutor. To get the most out of the course, please bring a notebook for taking notes, wear closed-toe shoes for safety, and feel free to bring any design ideas or sketches you’d like to explore. Full health and safety guidance for working in the studio will be provided during your first session.
