Access to HE at SGS College
Access to HE courses are aimed at adults who are interested in going to university but don’t have the necessary qualifications to get into higher education. The course will provide subject knowledge and help to develop your confidence and study skills, as well as opening up new career possibilities. Access to HE courses are especially designed for adults who have had a break from studying and are generally accepted by universities as an alternative to A levels. Subjects available to students include Dance, Performing Arts, Music and Technical Theatre, Acting and Musical Theatre.
The Access Facts
Students should not normally have qualifications above GCSE although we will look at all individual cases. We offer core modules of study in English, maths, ICT and study skills. Specialist modules are provided related to academic and occupational areas. The courses are one year in duration (16 hours per week over 4 or 5 days). We will consider other work related experience where appropriate for admission to some courses.
Support on the Access Programme
Returning to full time study may be somewhat daunting if you have been out of education, whether this has been for a short or long period of time. As part of your Access course you will be allocated to a tutor, and they will support you through the course and your university applications. Our average class sizes are often around 18 students. In addition to timetabled lessons we offer ‘drop in’ sessions for all subjects as well as additional learning support for numeracy, literacy or specific learning disabilities. The Access team at Filton also benefit from having dedicated careers advisors for adults returning to education and embarking on to university.
The Access Pathways
ICT pathway is for candidates who intend to study any of the previously mentioned disciplines at university. You will study the core units, Business Studies and Law. As well as the core units in ICT, there are additional units in this subject such as Web Design.
