Covid Update

On Tuesday 29 March, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Sajid Javid, set out the next steps for living with COVID-19 in England from Friday 1 April.

Updated guidance advises:

  • Adults with the symptoms of a respiratory infection, and who have a high temperature or feel unwell, should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people until they feel well enough to resume normal activities and no longer have a high temperature.
  • Children and young people who are unwell and have a high temperature should stay at home and avoid contact with other people. They can return to college when they no longer have a high temperature, and are well enough to attend.
  • Adults with a positive COVID-19 test result should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people for 5 days, which is when they are most infectious. For children and young people aged 18 and under, the advice is 3 days.

For education and childcare settings from Friday 1 April:

  • Regular asymptomatic testing is no longer recommended in any education or childcare setting, including in SEND, alternative provision and children’s social care settings. Therefore, we will no longer be able to order test kits .

FTE Salary: Up to £28,620.00 (Salary is dependent on qualifications and experience)

Actual Salary: £11,602.70
Contract Type: Permanent, Part-Time
Working Hours: up to 15 hours per week

The SGS Life department has an exciting opportunity for a Functional skills Literacy tutor working at the Stroud campus, with possible teaching taking place in the local community teaching literacy to adults.


The tutor will be an experienced individual, suitably qualified with a proven track record of delivering literacy courses with excellent and inspiring teaching style which develops learners and motivates them to be better. The tutor will have good administration skills including managing the exam process in coordination with the exams team at the college.


The successful candidate will teach within our Adult provision, the team are very supportive and work in a cohesive manner with similar values and ethos towards adult education and above all work together and help one another. This role includes daytime and maybe evening. This role would suit someone with an understanding of adult learners and the ability to deliver innovative learning opportunities to meet their needs.


We welcome applications from experienced and newly qualified tutors, tutors with occupational expertise and experience and who can demonstrate their enthusiasm and have a desire to work with adult learners. FE or community teaching experience is essential and a formal teaching qualification is desirable.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  •  Teaching Functional Skills courses in the community to adults looking for employment, further development, career progression or just wanting to increase their skills
  • Maintain up to date and accurate learner and programme documentation including reviews, ILPs, registers and learner tracking
  •  Assist with learner recruitment for the Adult courses
    To work closely with other Assessor/Tutors to support a group of learners in a learning environment

Beneficial Skills and Qualifications

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent or have substantial relevant subject experience or occupational experience
  • Experience working with Adult literacy programmes
  • Experience in delivering qualifications to adults and administering the exam process
