Covid Update

On Tuesday 29 March, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Sajid Javid, set out the next steps for living with COVID-19 in England from Friday 1 April.

Updated guidance advises:

  • Adults with the symptoms of a respiratory infection, and who have a high temperature or feel unwell, should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people until they feel well enough to resume normal activities and no longer have a high temperature.
  • Children and young people who are unwell and have a high temperature should stay at home and avoid contact with other people. They can return to college when they no longer have a high temperature, and are well enough to attend.
  • Adults with a positive COVID-19 test result should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people for 5 days, which is when they are most infectious. For children and young people aged 18 and under, the advice is 3 days.

For education and childcare settings from Friday 1 April:

  • Regular asymptomatic testing is no longer recommended in any education or childcare setting, including in SEND, alternative provision and children’s social care settings. Therefore, we will no longer be able to order test kits .

Preparation for Work and Life Department at SGS College has an excellent reputation for delivering an outstanding curriculum of Life skills and Employability to students who may need more time to acquire the skills they need for independent living and employment, or previously had a bad experience or feel anxious about education. 

To maintain the growth of provision within our department and to support various new projects, we are looking for a self-motivated individual who can confidently teach Functional Skills from Entry level 1 up to Level One, and is also able to deliver across various subject areas including Employability, Life Skills and Personal Wellbeing.

Our learners need innovative and creative teaching methods to encourage and engage learning.  If you are passionate about teaching and learning, are able to translate this to your students using a range of effective strategies, you will enjoy being part of a committed team.  You should feel confident working with challenging behaviours, Special Educational Needs and disability and SEMH.  Experience of working with young people on the autistic spectrum would also be advantageous.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Under the supervision of the Learning Area Manager, and working with the other tutors in Department, to plan and deliver a curriculum to include Life skills, social skills, employability, maths and English.
  • Coach, assist and support students undertaking Functional Skills maths and English and employability skills and qualifications within a full-time study programme via blended learning where necessary, to achieve their qualification successfully and within a reasonable time frame. This will require flexibility to deal with varying abilities within groups, and the sensitivity to identify particular learning requirements.
  • To communicate progress and provide feedback to the Learning Area Manager. This will involve regular and open discussion, advising on learner progress, any issues relating to the programme.
  • To support learners needs and liaise with appropriate departments with any safeguarding needs

Beneficial Skills & Qualifications

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent or have substantial relevant subject experience.
  • Teaching Qualification (DTLLS) or willing to be working towards
  • Experience working with entry to level 1 students with SEND and SEMH
  • GCSE Maths and English grade C or above or Level 2 equivalent
