About the course

This one year course offers you the opportunity to explore materials, methods, and processes that support creative activities in art and design, while beginning to develop key technical skills.

Throughout the programme, you will be encouraged to experiment with a wide range of art, design, and photography techniques. Research, idea generation, and reflection are integral parts of the learning process, enabling you to respond meaningfully to projects and grow as an artist and designer.

Course content

You will take part in a variety of projects exploring creative disciplines such as drawing, animation, 3D crafts, fashion design, photography, digital art, printmaking, and painting. Over the year, you will produce 2D, 3D, and time-based work, helping you build a broad and adaptable skill set across multiple media.

The programme culminates in a final major project during the summer term, providing you with the opportunity to apply your skills with greater independence and creative ownership.

Maths & English
A good understanding and application of both English and Maths are essential for future progression and employment. As part of this programme, you will also have the opportunity to study GCSE English and Maths, with the aim of achieving at least a Grade 4 in both subjects.
What do I need to join

In addition to a strong interest in the subject, you will need:

  • Four GCSEs at grade 3 or above (ideally including English or Maths, but not essential)

  • A positive attitude toward learning, including being committed, punctual, and open to new ideas and skills

  • Ideally, completion of a relevant Level 1 qualification

  • A portfolio of creative work to present at interview

What can I do next

Upon completing this course, you will have diverse and flexible progression options, including the opportunity to study a range of Level 3 programmes in Fine Art, Design & Communication, Photography, Film & Media, Make-up Artistry, Games Design and Music.

After completing further programmes at Level 3 and beyond, you could work in a wide variety of creative fields. You may work freelance or perhaps as part of a studio or professional organisation. You could be a painter, an illustrator, a photographer, a sculptor, a fashion or textiles designer, an interior designer, a ceramist, a filmmaker or animator, a printmaker, a designer, an architect, a game artist or something else creative altogether. Alternatively, you might pursue a career in teaching, art therapy or curation.

With endless possibilities in the creative sector, this course provides the foundation to explore and succeed in a variety of roles within the arts and design industries.
