Young Adult Carers

Who are young adult carers?

Young adult carers are young people aged 16-25 who care, unpaid, for a family member or friend with an illness or disability, mental health condition or an addiction.

They may be caring as part of a family, or they may be the only person providing care.

They are often taking on responsibilities you would expect of an adult. These might include, looking after siblings, shopping, paying bills, doing housework, cooking, providing physical care and emotional support, managing the family budget, collecting medication and helping to administer it.

How does caring impact a young person's life?

Being a young adult carer can have many positive effects, such as:

  • Greater sensitivity to others
  • Enhanced life skills
  • Strong family bonds

However, if young adult carers are not given proper support, there can be some serious impacts:

  • Impaired educational, social, emotional, and physical development
  • Incomplete education
  • Poor social skills
  • Permanent physical injuries (e.g. back injuries from lifting)

What can SGS College offer young adult carers?

  • A designated team with special responsibility for young adult carers.
  • Access to our Wellbeing Service, where young adult carers can get 1:1 support from an Education & Wellbeing Mentor or see our College Counsellor. The Wellbeing Service also provides Foodbank vouchers and free period products, to any learner in need.
  • We can put young adult carers in touch with the local Young Carers Service and can also put families in touch with other support services.
  • Accessibility to parents who have mobility and communication difficulties, giving them the opportunity to be involved in parents' evenings.
  • We will consider alternatives if young adult carers are unable to attend college due to their caring responsibilities.
  • An online young adult carers peer support group, where young adult carers can come together to support each other and where we share information relating to young adult carers.
  • Regular young adult carer drop-in sessions.

Children Looked After, Care Leavers and Children Previously Looked After

Who are Children Looked After, Care Leavers and Children Previously Looked After?

A child who has been in the care of their local authority for more than 24 hours and/or is subject to a care order or a placement order from court has 'looked-after' status. Whilst looked-after child remains the statutory description, 'child looked-after', 'child with care experience' or 'child in care' are also terms which are used.

Care leavers are young people aged 16-25 years old who have been in care at some point since they were 14-years old and were in care on or after their sixteenth birthday. These young people are statutorily entitled to some ongoing help and support from the local authority after they leave care.

Children previously looked after are those who are no longer looked after by a local authority because they are the subject of an adoption, special guardianship or child arrangements order. They are children who were in care and have now left care.

What can SGS College offer to Children Looked After, Care Leavers and Children Previously Looked After?

  • A designated team with special responsibility for Children Looked After, Care Leavers and Children Previously Looked After, who will provide advocacy and liaise with Social Workers and the Virtual School to ensure these learners are fully supported during their time at college.
  • Access to the SGS Wellbeing Service, where care experienced young people can get 1:1 support from an Education & Wellbeing Mentor or see the College Counsellor. The Wellbeing Service also provides Foodbank vouchers and free period products, to any learner in need.
  • 3 Personal Education Plan (PEP) meetings per academic year for Children looked after.
  • At least two careers' appointments per academic year with our qualified Careers Advisors. (Careers Advice)
  • Financial Support. ( Financial Support (Money Management Service))

Being in care can have a profound and lasting impact on a young person's life. While every experience is unique, there are common challenges and long-term effects that these young people often face but with the right support, these young people can overcome challenges, achieve their goals and reach their full potential.
