World Plumbing Day contest at SGS

Students from SGS College’s plumbing department will go head to head in competition with students from other colleges in the region to recognise World Plumbing Day, 11 March.

The Competition, which will take place at the College’s Filton and Stroud campuses as well as Wiltshire College, Gloucestershire College, Swindon College and City of Bristol College, will see students carry out a timed plumbing task, which will be judged based on speed and accuracy of work.

A winner will be awarded at each campus that will then be compared against students from competing colleges to crown an overall winner from the region.

Representatives from local employers including NKS, CF ROBERTS, EC MERRETT, Mark Pollard Heating Services, Intoheat, Bateman’s Gas Services and more will judge the competition.

To commemorate the event first and second year apprentices at QinetiQ, Wiltshire and the Skills Funding Agency have created three Olympic style torches to be passed between the Colleges throughout the day.

Established in 2010 by the World Plumbing Council (WPC), World Plumbing Day on March 11 is dedicated to helping the general public better understand the vital role the plumbing industry plays in protecting public health and safety.

This event is also part of National Apprenticeship Week, which runs from 9 to 13 March 2015 and will celebrate apprenticeships and the positive impact they have on individuals, businesses and the wider economy.

The College is still looking for judges for the event. If you are an employer and would like to get involved either as a judge or for the opportunity to meet the apprentices of the future, please contact: Martin Kosack on 0117 909 2303 or Trudy Hillier on 01453 761135.
