Top Billing for SGS Academy Golfers at Dunhill Links Trophy
Once again the lucky SGS Golf Academy students have been in the thick of the action on a work experience trip to St Andrews, for the European Tour’s, Alfred Dunhill Links Championships.
Four glorious, sun-drenched October days at the home of golf was the perfect tonic to inspire the professional golfers of tomorrow to hone their games to compete at the highest level.
Manning leader boards and carry boards at the unique Tour event, saw the 14 students observing many of the stars of the stage and screen team up with the world’s elite golfers in the better ball event.
Three months on from The Open Championship on the Old Course where former student, Ali Balcombe, qualified and competed in Tom Watson’s last major championship, the fairways were well-trodden by the next generation of golfers who are part of the nationally recognised and Bristol based college golf programme.
On the last day of the event, Ben Law and Jak Theyer (pictured), were the two lucky golfers who got to see the conclusion of the event in the last two groups, which saw Thorbjorn Olesen comfortably maintain his third round lead to win by two shots. It was great to see Bristol’s, Chris Wood, card his best Dunhill finish in joint fourth spot.
With range practice at the end of each working day for the students, and a round on the excellent Monifieth Links near Dundee on the Monday following tournament, even the late burst of rain or the eight hour bus trip back to Bristol didn’t dampen the spirits of the youngsters.
“It’s a fantastic occasion for our golfers,” remarked Peter Langford, Head of Golf at SGS College. “The whole trip, from catering and looking after themselves away from home, is a great chance for them to make giant steps towards being independent, building a team spirit, and taking on some wise words from the staff! It should set them up nicely for the year ahead.”
