Bristol School of Art - Queens Road, Bristol

Bristol School of Art (RWA Campus) is situated in the right hand wing of the Royal West of England Academy. The building, completed in 1858, offers an impressive façade to the Victoria Rooms in Queens Road, Clifton.  A school of Art has existed continuously since this time, offering art education in a range of disciplines.

The School offers a variety of courses in a wide range of areas.  Our core provision remains the Foundation Diploma in Art, Design & Media which allows students to study at Level 3. The Foundation course is a full-time, one year course designed to prepare students for Higher Education in Art, Design and Media. This is the primary route to Art and Design related subjects at degree level, and so to a career within the Arts. The Foundation course is diagnostic in nature: it enables each student to explore a wide range of media, processes and concepts.

There are further opportunities to study various specialist subjects on a part-time basis. These classes are run in the evening and subjects include Art History, Ceramics, Digital Image Making, Enamelling, Furniture Design & Making,  Jewellery, Life Drawing, Drawing, Painting, General Printmaking, Screen Printing and Sculpture. Students may attend these classes without restriction.

Students study at the School for a variety of reasons: they might enjoy working creatively with like-minded people; they might wish to pursue an interest to a higher level; they may want to prepare themselves for higher education or work, they might seek stimulation, determination and the courage to change careers and some artists, designers, teachers and therapists may seek to continue their professional development through the acquisition of new skills.

Enthusiastic and highly qualified staff help students achieve their aims through carefully designed courses, a sympathetic and encouraging approach and an individual programme of assessments and tutorials (the level of which varies across the courses). Students participate in many exhibitions, both local and national (occasionally international) and are encouraged to approach their studies in an ambitious and professional manner.
