This nationally recognised Level 2 qualification is ideal if you’re currently volunteering in a school, working as a lunchtime supervisor, a parent or carer, or simply exploring a new professional direction. As a Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in helping pupils overcome challenges, access learning, and thrive within the classroom environment. This course will give you the essential skills, knowledge, and confidence to support both teachers and students, while setting you on a path for further progression in education.

Course content

You will explore key topics including child development, safeguarding, promoting positive behaviour, supporting learning activities, and understanding school structures and policies. The course balances theoretical learning with hands-on experience and includes units such as:

  • Understanding the role of a teaching assistant
  • Supporting learning and development
  • Safeguarding and child protection
  • Health and safety in schools
  • Supporting children with special educational needs (SEN)

Throughout the course, you will compile a professional portfolio that evidences your skills, knowledge, and reflections on your role in the classroom.

How is the course delivered and assessed?
This is a blended course, combining in-person workshops and tutorials with practical, work-based learning in a school setting. You are required to have a placement in a primary or secondary school for at least 6 hours per week. A workplace mentor will support you on-site, and your college tutor will carry out observations and provide regular guidance. Assessment is continuous and based on your portfolio, practical performance, and engagement with course materials. There are no formal exams, allowing you to demonstrate your progress through real-life application.
What do I need to join (Entry Requirements)

No formal qualification requirements are needed to enrol in this course, making it accessible to individuals from diverse backgrounds. However, it's essential to note that the government promotes proficiency in English, Maths, and Information Communication Technology (ICT) for all learners. It is recommended that you strive to achieve a Level 2 proficiency in these subjects by the end of your qualification. If you don't already possess this level of proficiency, supplementary courses will be available alongside the main qualification.

For those not currently employed in a school, securing a work placement at a primary or secondary school is necessary for a minimum of 6 hours a week. It's your responsibility to discuss the requirements for a current Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check with your chosen school. By completing the Level 2 Certificate, you'll compile a portfolio showcasing your work and achievements.
