This Level 3 Solar PV Installation and Maintenance apprenticeship unit is a short, flexible training programme designed to upskill qualified electricians in the fundamentals of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems.

The course focuses on the design, installation, commissioning, inspection, and maintenance of solar PV systems across residential, commercial, and industrial environments. Learners will gain the technical knowledge and practical skills required to safely install and maintain solar technologies in line with current industry standards.

What do I need to join

To enrol on this course, you must be currently employed, aged 19 or over, and a fully qualified electrician, with the support of your employer to undertake the training. This course is specifically designed for electricians who want to expand their skillset into solar PV installation and maintenance.

This course is delivered at Level 3 and typically runs over 1–16 weeks, with a minimum of 35 hours of learning. It is currently eligible for public funding, subject to availability and ongoing review. Assessment includes a mandatory skills test delivered by the training provider, with employer validation required to confirm competence. There is also the option for an additional external assessment where appropriate.

Learners will develop the knowledge and skills needed to work confidently with solar PV systems, including health and safety legislation, system design and installation, and electrical calculations. The course also covers fault finding, inspection, testing, and maintenance, as well as working with PV components and their integration with technologies such as EV chargers and battery storage. In addition, learners will gain experience in accurate documentation and effective digital communication.
