During the course, you will cover:

  • Structuring and constructing a feature article
  • Analysing and discussing published sports writing
  • Interview techniques for sports journalism
  • Writing effective match reports
  • Design principles and magazine layout basics
  • Practical writing and design exercises
  • Live sports coverage, including attending a match
  • Producing a professional match report
How is the course delivered and assessed?

This course is delivered through practical, tutor-led workshops using the college’s media facilities, including computers and industry-relevant software.

You will take part in hands-on exercises focused on copywriting, page layout and design. The course also includes attending a live sports event, giving you the opportunity to practise reporting in a real-world setting.

Assessment is informal, with ongoing feedback provided throughout to support your development.

About the tutor

Karan Tejwani is a Sports Media lecturer, teaching Levels 3 to 6, and has been with SGS College since April 2023. He has professional experience with organisations including BBC Sport, Sky Sports, The Athletic and Football Transfers, and is the author of three books: Wings of Change, Glorious Reinvention and The Thinkers’ Factory.

What do I need to join
  • No prior experience in sports journalism is required
  • Applicants must be aged 19 or over at the start of the academic year
