About the course

This ceramics course provides a structured introduction to the skills and knowledge needed for creative study at Level 2. Over 60 hours of teaching and studio practice, you will develop practical ceramic techniques, explore creative influences, and begin building a portfolio of work. The course follows the UAL Level 2 Art & Design Award structure and supports progression to further study in ceramics or art and design.

Course content

You will explore a range of ceramic materials, processes and technical approaches, developing confidence in hand-building, surface decoration and finishing techniques through practical workshops. Alongside making, you will research artists and designers to help inform your ideas and deepen your understanding of contemporary ceramic practice.

The course follows two key units within the qualification:
Unit 1: Introduction to Materials, Processes and Technical Skills – exploring ceramic materials, techniques and workshop practices.
Unit 2: Introduction to Contextual Research and Project Development – developing ideas through research, experimentation and response to creative briefs.

You will develop visual communication skills and produce a small portfolio of work. The course concludes with a self-directed Final Major Project, allowing you to explore your own creative direction.

How is the course delivered and assessed?
The course is delivered through practical studio workshops, demonstrations, research activities and tutor guidance. You will complete coursework throughout the programme and submit your Final Major Project digitally via Teams. The qualification is assessed through coursework
About the tutor
Gina Baum is a Ceramic artists based in Stroud. She creates unique porcelain sculptures developed from experimenting with hand building techniques and reclaimed ceramics. Her work is exhibited throughout the UK and is represented by Hone Gallery in London. Gina has taught Ceramics and Wellbeing courses at SGS Stroud since 2021. Gina completed a Foundation in Art and Design in 2013 at SGS Stroud, a BA in Drawing and Applied Arts in 2017 at University West of England, Bristol and a MA in 2019 at the Royal College of Art in London. She enjoys sharing her knowledge, skills and enthusiasm for Ceramics with everyone.
What do I need to join
Applicants must be at least 19 years of age at the start of the academic year, and this course is suitable for all levels of ability. Students will need to have previously completed our UAL Level 1 Course or have equivalent knowledge. Please email [email protected] if you wish to check your eligibility.

Additional information

Your course fee includes high-quality materials such as clay for test pieces, a sketchbook and tools. For larger-scale work, you may be asked to contribute a small additional fee for extra clay, which can be discussed with your tutor.

To get the most out of the course, please bring a notebook for taking notes, wear closed-toe shoes for safety, and feel free to bring any design ideas or sketches you would like to explore. Full health and safety guidance for working in the ceramics studio will be provided during your first session.
