This ceramics course provides a structured introduction to the skills and knowledge needed for creative study at Level 2. Over 60 hours of teaching and studio practice, you will develop practical ceramic techniques, explore creative influences, and begin building a portfolio of work. The course follows the UAL Level 2 Art & Design Award structure and supports progression to further study in ceramics or art and design.
You will explore a range of ceramic materials, processes and technical approaches, developing confidence in hand-building, surface decoration and finishing techniques through practical workshops. Alongside making, you will research artists and designers to help inform your ideas and deepen your understanding of contemporary ceramic practice.
The course follows two key units within the
qualification:
Unit 1: Introduction to Materials, Processes and Technical
Skills – exploring ceramic materials, techniques and workshop
practices.
Unit 2: Introduction to Contextual Research and Project
Development – developing ideas through research, experimentation and
response to creative briefs.
You will develop visual communication skills and produce a small portfolio of work. The course concludes with a self-directed Final Major Project, allowing you to explore your own creative direction.
Applicants must be aged 19 or over at the
start of the academic year.
You should have
previously completed the UAL Level 1 Art & Design course or have equivalent
knowledge or experience.
If you are unsure about your eligibility, please email [email protected] before applying.
Your course fee includes high-quality materials such as clay for test pieces, a sketchbook and tools. For larger-scale work, you may be asked to contribute a small additional fee for extra clay, which can be discussed with your tutor.
To get the most out of the course, please bring a notebook for taking notes, wear closed-toe shoes for safety, and feel free to bring any design ideas or sketches you would like to explore. Full health and safety guidance for working in the ceramics studio will be provided during your first session.
