About the course

The UAL Level 1 Award in Research to Practice in Contemporary Stained Glass is an adult learning course designed for beginners and those looking to develop their creative practice.

This course introduces traditional stained glass techniques while helping you explore and develop your own artistic voice. You will work in a supportive studio environment, combining practical skills with research, experimentation and creative design.

It is ideal if you are interested in art, craft, and decorative glass, and want to build confidence in both making and developing ideas.

Course content

The course is structured across three terms, combining skills development, research and a final project.

Term 1 – Foundations and Research

  • Drawing, painting and printing refreshers
  • Introduction to stained glass design and cartooning
  • Developing ideas through research
  • Optional visit to the V&A or similar exhibition

Term 2 – Development and Experimentation

  • Translating ideas into glass
  • Testing and sampling techniques
  • Working with painted, fused and decorative glass
  • Developing personal imagery and style

Term 3 – Final Project

  • Designing and producing a completed stained glass panel
  • Applying skills developed throughout the course

    How is the course delivered and assessed?

    The course is delivered through practical, studio-based sessions, including demonstrations, workshops, tutorials and group critiques.

    You will gain hands-on experience in a range of stained glass techniques, including:

    • Health and safety when working with glass and lead
    • Glass cutting using machine rolled and mouth-blown glass
    • Kiln-fired glass painting, enamels and silver stain
    • Leading and copper foiling techniques
    • Basic fusing, inclusions and surface treatments

    You will also:

    • Take part in 1:1 tutorials and group critiques
    • Research historical and contemporary stained glass
    • Complete a site visit to view stained glass in public spaces
    • Record your work through sketchbooks and digital methods
      • Assessment

        This is a UAL Level 1 qualification assessed through a portfolio of work. Your final portfolio is externally moderated by the UAL Awarding Body.

        You will receive ongoing feedback throughout the course to support your progress.

        What do I need to join
        • No previous experience in stained glass or kiln-fired techniques is required
        • An interest in art, design or craft-based practice
        • Basic practical or creative skills are helpful but not essential

        This course is also suitable for learners with some art or craft experience who want to develop a specific technique or project.

        What can I do next

        On successful completion, you can progress to:

        • UAL Level 2 Award in Creative Craft (Stained Glass)
        • Further art and design courses at Level 2 or Level 3
        • Specialist craft or glass-based training

        You may also continue developing your personal practice or work towards building a portfolio for further study.

          • Basic materials such as glass, lead and solder are provided
          • You will need to bring your own sketchbook
          • Additional specialist materials may need to be purchased if required
          • It is recommended to bring an apron, as some processes can be messy
