About the course

The Ceramics Intermediate/Advanced with Vicky course is designed for adult learners who already have experience working with clay and want to further develop their creative and technical skills. This practical course focuses on expanding knowledge of hand building techniques, exploring a wider range of ceramic materials, and developing more complex functional, sculptural and decorative ceramic pieces.

Learners will work in a supportive studio environment, developing personal ideas while sharing knowledge and inspiration with like minded people. The course encourages creative growth through experimentation, discussion, and guided practical work.

Course content

During the course, learners will:

  • Develop a deeper understanding of hand building techniques
  • Explore a wider range of clays and decorative ceramic materials
  • Develop further understanding of decorative glazes and surface finishes
  • Gain greater understanding of the materials and processes used in pottery
  • Create more refined functional, sculptural and decorative ceramic pieces
  • Take part in discussions exploring the history of pottery
  • Develop ideas through research, with encouragement to keep a scrapbook or visual journal
  • Share ideas, skills and creative approaches within a group learning environment
How is the course delivered and assessed?

The course is delivered through practical, tutor led workshops, supported by demonstrations, group discussion and individual guidance.

There is no formal assessment for this course. The tutor will closely monitor learner progress throughout the workshops and provide ongoing technical guidance and support to help learners develop their skills and confidence.

About the tutor

The course is taught by Vicky Hendzel, a fully qualified ceramics tutor with over 30 years’ experience developing her own ceramic practice. Vicky has hosted several exhibitions and has opened her own studio over the years, bringing a wealth of professional and practical experience to her teaching.

What do I need to join
  • Applicants must be at least 19 years of age at the start of the academic year
  • Learners must have previous experience of ceramics and working with clay
  • This course is suitable for those at intermediate or advanced level who wish to further develop their ceramic practice
What can I do next

After completing this course, learners may choose to:

  • Progress to UAL Levels 1 and 2 in Ceramics
  • Develop ceramics as a long term personal or studio based practice
  • Build a portfolio to support progression into other art and design subjects
Additional information
  • When attending practical sessions, learners should wear old clothes or an apron, as ceramic work can be messy
  • Open toed sandals or shoes are not permitted
  • Learners are encouraged to bring a notebook or sketchbook to record ideas, techniques and glazing details
