About the course

This Ceramics Beginners course is ideal for adult learners who want to explore their creativity and learn the foundations of working with clay. Taught by an experienced ceramics tutor, the course introduces key hand building techniques and encourages creative experimentation in a supportive, relaxed studio environment.

Learners will create a range of functional, decorative and sculptural ceramic pieces, while building confidence and developing practical craft skills. The course also offers a valuable opportunity to meet like minded people and share ideas within a group setting.

Course content

During the course, learners will:

  • Explore a range of hand building ceramic techniques
  • Learn about earthenware clays and their properties
  • Experiment with decorative glazes and surface finishes
  • Develop an understanding of the materials used in ceramics
  • Gain insight into the history of pottery and its influence on contemporary practice
  • Create functional, sculptural and decorative ceramic pieces
  • Develop ideas through research, with encouragement to keep a scrapbook or visual journal
How is the course delivered and assessed?

The course is delivered through hands on workshops and tutor demonstrations, allowing learners to develop skills through practical making.

There is no formal assessment. The tutor will monitor progress throughout the course and provide ongoing technical guidance and support during workshop sessions. Learners are also encouraged to carry out some independent study to support their creative development.

About the tutor

The course is taught by Vicky Hendzel, a fully qualified ceramics tutor with over 30 years’ experience developing her own ceramic practice. Vicky has hosted several exhibitions and has opened her own studio over the years, bringing a wealth of professional and practical experience to her teaching.

What do I need to join
  • Applicants must be 19 years of age or over at the start of the academic year
  • This course is suitable for beginners
  • Learners should have an interest in ceramics, a willingness to learn new skills, and be able to listen, participate, and work as part of a group
What can I do next

After completing this course, learners may choose to:

  • Progress to Ceramics Intermediate/Advanced with Vicky
  • UAL Level 1 in Ceramics
  • Develop ceramics as a personal hobby or creative practice
  • Build a portfolio to support progression into other art and design subjects
Additional information
  • Learners should wear old clothes or bring an apron, as ceramic work can be messy
  • Open toed sandals or shoes are not permitted
  • Bringing a notebook or sketchbook is recommended to record ideas and glazing details
