Are you curious about how digital systems shape the modern world? Do you want to understand how cyber security protects individuals and organisations from threats? Are you interested in designing websites and managing data to solve real-world problems? Do you want to develop skills that are essential for careers in IT, business, and digital innovation? If the answer to any of the above is a ‘yes’, then IT AAQ Level 3 may be the subject for you!
Information Technology is the study of how digital systems operate and how they are used in personal and professional contexts. You will explore the relationship between hardware and software, how data is transmitted and protected, and how IT systems are designed to meet user needs. You will also learn how to develop websites and relational databases, gaining practical skills in design, development, and testing. The course equips you with the knowledge and skills needed to understand and apply digital technologies in a wide range of sectors.
IT AAQ Level 3 is taught from the Pearson BTEC board. You will complete two externally assessed units and two internally assessed units. The external units are examined through formal assessments, while the internal units involve practical assignments including website and database development. The qualification is equivalent to one A Level and is designed to be taken alongside other A Levels.
Year 1
1. Information Technology Systems: You will explore how IT
systems operate, including the relationship between hardware and software, and
the implications of using IT in different contexts. Topics include data
transmission, online systems, data protection, and emerging technologies such as
AI.
2. Website Development: You will learn how to design and build websites using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. You will respond to a client brief, create wireframes and assets, and test your website for usability and functionality.
Year 2
3. Cyber Security and Incident Management: You will study
different types of cyber threats and vulnerabilities, and how organisations
protect themselves. You will also learn how to manage and investigate security
incidents using forensic techniques.
4. Relational Database Development: You will explore how data is structured and stored using relational databases. You will design and develop a database solution using tools such as SQL, and test it to ensure it meets client requirements.
IT AAQ Level 3 is a highly transferable qualification and can be combined with subjects such as Business, Mathematics, Psychology, and Art. You can progress to degrees in Information Systems, Computer Science, and Business Studies. Careers may include web development, data analysis, cyber security, software engineering, and IT consultancy.
There are opportunities to further develop your learning through enrichment activities such as coding clubs, digital skills workshops, and guest talks from industry professionals. You may also take part in national competitions and attend Sixth Form Talks from universities and employers in the digital and technology sectors.
