About the course

This 8-week course is designed for adult learners who want to build confidence in using and creating content for social media. It is ideal for beginners looking to understand popular platforms, connect with others, or reach a wider audience.

You will explore how to create engaging content, communicate effectively online, and use social media safely. By the end of the course, you will achieve the Award in Social Media Marketing, helping you take your next steps in using social media for personal or professional purposes.

Course content

During this course, you will develop key skills and knowledge, including:

  • Introduction to popular social media platforms (e.g. Facebook, Instagram, TikTok)
  • Creating engaging posts using images, video, and text
  • Basic photography and video techniques using mobile devices
  • Planning and publishing content effectively
  • Understanding audiences and increasing engagement
  • Safe and responsible use of social media
  • Managing accounts, profiles, and privacy settings
  • Introduction to social media marketing principles
How is the course delivered and assessed?

The course is delivered through practical, tutor-led workshops using the college’s computers and software, alongside your own mobile device (phone or tablet).

You will also have opportunities to use still and video cameras from the college’s media facilities. Sessions are hands-on, allowing you to practise and develop your skills, with support from your tutor throughout.

Assessment is carried out through coursework completed during the course.

About the tutor

Steve Mazillius has extensive experience teaching social media and creative media skills. He has worked on programmes for Channel 4 and the BBC and has spent over 20 years supporting learners to develop practical skills across a range of social and digital media platforms.

What do I need to join
  • This course is suitable for beginners with little or no prior experience
  • It is recommended that you bring your own mobile device (phone or tablet with internet and camera)
  • Applicants must be aged 19 or over at the start of the academic year
