About the course

The UAL Level 1 Award in Ceramics with Vicky is an introductory course designed for adult learners who want to explore working with clay while building creative skills and confidence.

Suitable for beginners, this course provides a structured and supportive pathway into ceramic art. You will learn essential techniques, develop your own ideas, and create finished ceramic pieces—from initial concept through to completion—while working in a studio environment.

You will be taught by Vicky Hendzel, a fully qualified tutor with over 30 years of experience in ceramics. Vicky has exhibited her work and run her own studio, bringing valuable industry knowledge and creative insight to her teaching.

Course content

You will develop a range of practical and creative ceramic skills, including:

  • Research and idea development for ceramic projects
  • Design planning using sketchbooks and journals
  • Hand-building techniques
  • Surface decoration methods
  • Creating test tiles and experimental samples
  • Producing a final ceramic piece based on your own design
  • Reflecting on your creative process and development
How is the course delivered and assessed?

This course is delivered through practical studio-based sessions, combining demonstrations, hands-on learning, and individual support.

Assessment includes:

  • Completion of a final ceramic project
  • Use of a sketchbook or journal to document ideas, techniques, and reflections
  • Participation in practical activities and group discussions

About the tutor

The course is taught by Vicky Hendzel, a fully qualified ceramics tutor with over 30 years’ experience developing her own ceramic practice. Vicky has hosted several exhibitions and has opened her own studio over the years, bringing a wealth of professional and practical experience to her teaching.

What do I need to join
