About the course

The UAL Level 1 Award in Art and Design is an introductory course for adults aged 19+ who are interested in developing their creative skills. It is ideal if you are new to art and design or looking to build confidence before progressing to further study.

You will explore a range of creative disciplines while gaining a solid foundation in practical and theoretical skills that underpin creative practice.

Course content

This course is divided into two key stages: skills development and project work. You will:

  • Explore a variety of art and design disciplines
  • Experiment with different materials, techniques and processes
  • Learn how to research and develop creative ideas
  • Build an understanding of core art and design principles
  • Respond to a creative brief
  • Produce a visual portfolio of your work
How is the course delivered and assessed?

The course is delivered through practical workshops and project-based learning, guided by experienced tutors. You will take part in hands-on activities and develop your own creative responses.

Assessment is based on:

  • A digital portfolio of your work
  • Overall assessment of your development and final outcomes

There are no formal exams.

What do I need to join
  • You must be aged 19 or over at the start of the academic year
  • No previous experience or qualifications are required
  • An interest in creativity, art and design
  • Willingness to explore different materials and techniques
What can I do next

On successful completion, you can progress to:

  • UAL Level 2 Award in Art and Design
  • Access to HE Diploma in Art and Design (Level 3)

This course provides a strong foundation for further study in creative subjects.

Additional information

Under the Local Flexibility offer, adults aged 19+ may be eligible to study this course for free if they earn below the current threshold of £25,000.

Additional eligibility criteria may apply, including for those who are unemployed.
