SGS College is celebrating the remarkable achievement of Stroud School of Art student Craigson Palmer, who has published and launched his debut novel DEEPFADED at just seventeen years old.

The launch took place on 17 February at Shire Hall, home to Gloucestershire County Council’s Fostering Service; a meaningful location, chosen by Craigson who has spent time in care.

Psychological thriller and coming-of-age novel, DEEPFADED explores themes of grief, trauma and identity through the voices of two autistic teenagers. The story follows their growing connection as they navigate a world that often misunderstands them, drawing the reader into a journey of strength, vulnerability, and unsettling truths.

Craigson began writing the book at just twelve years old, completing his first draft by age fourteen. Five years after Craigson first put pen to paper, his published novel stands as a testament to his creativity, discipline and lived experience. Craigson’s writing reflects the authenticity of someone who has overcome significant challenges, while offering a powerful and nuanced exploration of neurodivergence and emotional resilience. Having been diagnosed himself, Craigson felt there was a lack of authentic representation in the media.

Craigson Palmer, Student Author:

“I just want people to read it and feel connected to these characters, as I never started writing as a career, I started writing to help people feel understood and less lonely. There are still so many strong autistic women who have suffered years of their lives because they have been constantly ignored since childhood. They all deserve to read this book.”

Tom Henderson, Learning Area Manager, Art and Design Stroud:

“Craigson demonstrates the fantastic ambition of a creative young person on a mission. Writing a book is a huge undertaking (five years, in this case) but that alone wasn't enough for Craigson. The story about the story is important, too. From publishing the book, making it available for sale, using it as a starting point to raise money for important charities and marketing the book, this is a demonstration of entrepreneurship and commitment that will inspire many others. We're all really proud of our outstanding student and will keenly follow Craigson's creative future.”

Attendees at the Shire Hall event met with student author Craigson, heard about his creative journey, and joined in celebrating the achievements of care experienced young people across the country.

Craigson has donated all proceeds from DEEPFADED to organisations supporting women and children, such as Women’s Aid.
