About the course

Over this three-day workshop, you will immerse yourself in the fascinating world of slipware tile making. In this fun and experimental workshop led by artist Phil Root, you will explore both traditional and contemporary approaches to creating beautifully decorated ceramic tiles using slip techniques. Drawing inspiration from the rich history of slip-decorated ceramics, we will investigate a range of methods for applying coloured slips to clay surfaces, combining historical processes with modern creative practice. Over the three days, participants will learn how to use contrasting slips to create bold patterns, imagery, and surface decoration, while also exploring carving, inlay, mark-making, and layering techniques. We'll delve into the concepts of tessellation, repetition, and pattern design, enabling you to create intricate and visually striking tile compositions. Throughout the workshop, you'll be encouraged to experiment with both design and process, blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary ideas and personal symbolism to produce your own unique set of slipware tiles.
