Helen Godwin, Mayor of the West of England and former SGS College student, visited the SGS Filton Campus on Thursday 29th January, where she toured the campus, spent time in the Construction department speaking with learners about their courses and apprenticeships, met with A Level students, and reflected on her own time studying at the College.

During her time in Construction, Helen spoke with learners about the skills they are developing. She asked how their experience at the College was compared to school and whether the learning environment has enabled them to thrive.

One Construction apprentice commented:

“We feel like we can actually do what we want to do. I prefer doing physical work and at school you don't really have options like that.”

Helen and the learners also discussed employment opportunities within the Southwest of England region. Students shared that they were pleased with the local opportunities available and were keen to stay, work and progress within the area. Construction learners also highlighted the support they receive from their lecturers, noting the positive impact this has had on their confidence and personal development during their time at the college.

Mayor Helen also met with A Level students in A Block, where conversations focused on what led students to choose SGS College, and their plans after completing their studies. Students discussed their next steps, including progressing directly into employment, university or other forms of higher education, as well as whether they intended to study locally or elsewhere in the country.

Helen Godwin, Mayor of the West of England said:

“It’s been brilliant to see the scale of what happens here and to meet young people starting out on the apprenticeship route, with the self-belief that there’s a place for them In the region and that they can pursue whichever career they’d like.”

“…and meeting with A Level students and seeing the variety of courses available, and their ambition for what they want to do next, has been inspiring. It’s been brilliant to be here and be surrounded by young people.”

During the visit, Helen reflected on her own time studying at Filton Campus, which was then known as Filton College, prior to the merge with Stroud College in 2012 to form South Gloucestershire and Stroud College.

Helen Godwin, Mayor of the West of England said:

“When I came here, I made some good friends for life. It was a place where I went from childhood into adulthood in terms of learning to be independent, how I studied, how I learned, being around people and managing my own time. I have fond memories of being here and it’s just been wonderful to be back today.”

David Withey, SGS Chief Executive Officer and Principal, said:

“It was a privilege to welcome Helen back to our Filton Campus. Introducing her to our hardworking students and inspiring tutors, and hearing the engaging conversations taking place, highlighted the crucial role Further Education Colleges like SGS play. It has made me incredibly proud to be a part of the College.”
