Learners at SGS College’s Stroud Campus welcomed Simon Opher, Labour MP for Stroud on Friday 6th March for Colleges Week, where he met students, saw their work in action and visited a student exhibition celebrating International Women's Day.
Colleges Week is organised by the Association of Colleges and forms part of the national Love Our Colleges campaign, celebrating the positive impact colleges have on their students, communities and local economies. This year’s theme, ‘Skills for All’, highlighted the diverse range of learners in further education, with a different group of students recognised each day.
During the visit, Opher also attended the campus International Women’s Day Student Exhibition, which celebrated inspiring women and showcased student-led projects.
The exhibition featured work from GCSE, Animal Care, and Health and Social Care students, who created portraits and accompanying written pieces about women who have made a significant impact within their chosen field of study.
Music accompanied the exhibition, featuring piano from GCSE student Elizabeth Grove and acoustic guitar from Music student and Learner Leadership Team Member Lorcan McCarthy.
GCSE student Zuzia Krawczyk and her student peers created a hand-drawn bunting display highlighting prominent figures from the suffragette and suffragist movements, motivated by research carried out in their History class.
Zuzia spoke with the MP about how the research project inspired her to establish a new student club aimed at supporting female students. The club will focus on topics including gender equality, professional development, and creating safe spaces for women within the college community.
Speaking after the visit, Simon Opher, Labour MP said:
I’ve had a fantastic morning at SGS. Colleges Week is a great chance to recognise the vital role colleges play in shaping the future of our communities. Students are the future of our region, and it’s inspiring to see the opportunities SGS College provides to help them succeed. Thank you to everyone I met today.
