Darren Jones, Labour MP, visited SGS College's Brunel Centre at the WISE Campus on Friday 7th November as part of Get the Nation Learning Week (3-7 November), a national campaign led by the Learning and Work institute to celebrate and promote lifelong learning.
The visit was organised in collaboration with City of Bristol College, saw Mr Jones visit both SGS and City of Bristol campuses as part of the College West partnership, which brings together local colleges to champion skills, opportunity, and education across the region.
During his visit, Mr Jones explored our Bristol Academy of Media department, where he toured lecture rooms, kit rooms, studio spaces and saw the cutting-edge facilities available to students. He also interacted with Level 3 Games Design students and took part in a live television broadcast, where Level 3 Television and Film students were practising interview skills and working to tight production deadlines for their upcoming documentary projects.
Darren Jones MP said:
"It feels energetic at SGS, with so many students doing fantastic work to prepare for their futures. The facilities are brilliant, and I've gained a great insight into what life is like at SGS College and how this education can translate into fantastic businesses and careers in the future."
Mr Jones' visit came at a time when colleges and training providers are highlighting the importance of lifelong learning, the idea that learning doesn't have to ever stop. Get the Nation Learning Week promotes opportunities for people of all ages to retrain, upskill, or rediscover the joy of learning.
Darren Jones, Labour MP said:
"The Prime Minister has made it a priority to expand access to further education and technical training across the country. We need more of the types of courses that SGS offers for young people who don't necessarily want to go down the university route. The government is putting more funding and support behind colleges like SGS and others across the country to help make that happen."
This visit also followed the publication of the Government's White Paper on Education, which sets out a vision to strengthen the links between post-16 education and employment, ensuring all students are better equipped with the skills needed for the modern workforce.
David Withey, SGS Chief Executive Officer and Principal said:
"We were delighted to welcome Darren Jones MP to our Brunel Centre. His visit highlights the importance of the value that Colleges like SGS play in offering a wide range of courses and opportunities for learners, whether they're starting out or returning to education. The Bristol Academy of Media is a great example of how inspiring tutors and excellent facilities enables an environment where students truly enjoy learning and achieving."
The visit reiterates our continued commitment to providing high-quality education and skills training that meets the needs of both learners and local industry employment. Through initiatives like Get the Nation Learning Week and partnerships such as Colleges West, SGS College remains at the forefront of promoting lifelong learning and preparing students to thrive in their future.
