About the course

The skills and knowledge needed to care for individuals with dementia are more important than ever. This online qualification will help you understand dementia and teach you how to support those affected by it. You will learn essential topics like positive communication and person-centred care, which focuses on the individual’s needs at every stage of the illness.

The course will guide you on how to provide compassionate care during times of confusion, memory loss and other symptoms. Upon completing this course, learners can progress to our Level 3 Certificate in Understanding the Principles of Dementia Care.

Unit 1: Dementia Awareness
Learn about dementia, its common types, causes, and how to support those affected with helpful techniques.

Unit 2: Person-Centred Care for Individuals with Dementia
Understand how to provide care that makes individuals with dementia feel secure, with a focus on the carer’s role.

Unit 3: Communication with Individuals with Dementia
Learn how to communicate effectively with individuals with dementia, considering their unique needs.

Unit 4: Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion in Dementia Care
Understand how equality, diversity, and inclusion support effective dementia care and person-centred approaches.

Unit 5: Medication and Person-Centred Care
Learn about dementia medications and how to administer them based on individual needs.

Unit 6: Understanding Behaviour in Dementia
Understand the different behaviours associated with dementia and how to respond to them.

Unit 7: The Benefits of Activities in Social Care
Learn how social activities improve the well-being of individuals with dementia.

Please note, this is a fully online course and you will be given access to an online portfolio upon successful completion of the initial assessment process.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

Studying via distance learning means you can choose when and where you study, giving you the freedom to choose your learning schedule yourself whilst still gaining certification for your chosen subject.

We recommend spending a minimum of 2-4 hours per week on this course and we recommend completing within 12 weeks.

We appreciate this may be a new way of learning for many of you or there may be some further support required. If you find yourself feeling less than confident and look for additional support, we want to make sure we are there to offer that little bit extra and tailor it to your needs. This may include a phone call or emails with one of our dedicated tutors and support staff to help guide you through your course.
