Advance your expertise and enhance your retrofit career with this Level 3 Award focused on the installation and maintenance of heat pump systems without refrigerant circuits. This qualification prepares you to work confidently in the growing renewable heating sector, equipping you with the skills to install, commission, maintain, and optimise air source heat pump systems in line with industry standards and regulations.

Course content

The course is divided into two comprehensive units. In the first unit, you will learn the principles of heat pump operation, including environmental benefits, system components and their functions, and key performance metrics such as the Coefficient of Performance (COP). You will also study essential health and safety practices and become familiar with relevant regulations, including Building Regulations and the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) MIS 3005. Basic system design principles are also covered.

second unit focuses on practical skills and procedures, including the installation of air source heat pumps, commissioning and handover processes, routine maintenance, fault diagnosis, and performance checks. You will also learn how to integrate heat pumps with existing heating systems and provide customer advice for system optimisation.

How is the course delivered and assessed?
This course is delivered face to face at one of our centres. Assessment includes a multiple choice examination and a practical demonstration with accompanying knowledge-based questions to validate your understanding and skills.
