About the course

The Access to Science pathway is a highly respected Level 3 course designed for learners aspiring to pursue science-based degree courses and explore various career paths in fields such as physics, marine biology, chemistry, pharmacology, teaching, and more. This one-year course employs a blended learning approach, combining two days of in-person classes with one day of online instruction. Tailored for mature students returning to education (19+) or those seeking a different career path, the curriculum includes Academic Subject Content units in biology, chemistry, and physics, along with Study Skills units.

Course content

You will study a range of academic subjects essential to science-related university programmes. These include:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics or Psychology
  • Study and research skills

The programme includes 45 graded credits in core scientific subjects, and 15 ungraded credits focused on developing your study skills, critical thinking, assignment planning, and academic writing. The curriculum prepares you for university-level work and a wide range of science-based careers.

How is the course delivered and assessed?

The course is delivered through a blended model, consisting of three days in college and one day online each week. You will be assessed through a combination of academic essays, exams, written reports, practical investigations, and presentations. These varied methods help you develop a strong foundation in both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
