About the course
The SGS Level 1 Sports programme is designed to introduce learners to the exciting world of sport through a number of engaging topics and units. The programme combines both theory and practical experiences from the sector, whilst allowing learners to develop and improve on other key skills, such as English and maths. The course is a one year full-time course, and provides access to our Level 2 Sport and Level 2 Public Services programmes.
The Level 1 programme is made up of units, that are a mix of theory and practical work. This course is split into 2 sections; core units and sector units. Examples of these units include:

- Training for Fitness
- Coaching Skills in Sport
How do the Sports Academies work alongside this course?
Learners are able to access Sports Academies whilst studying at SGS College
on a full-time course. Your academic studies and academy training work as a
partnership, and as such, are never timetabled at the same time. This allows you
to continue your development within your selected sporting discipline, whilst
studying in an academic area that interests you.
For example, a learner may
have lectures on a Monday morning and then Academy training at WISE on a Monday
afternoon.
Maths & English
English and maths qualifications will be a part of this course package. Learners will have English and maths lectures embedded into their timetable to support their academic development over the programme’s duration.

Possible careers and salaries include:
Leisure Centre assistant - £13,000 to £20,000 depending upon experience

What do I need to join
Grade 2 GCSE from two of the following: English, Maths, Science or PE.
(other qualifications may be considered on an individual basis)
What can I do next
A high majority of our learner’s progress onto our Level 2 Sport programme, or other available Level 2 courses at SGS College. Following the successful completion of this qualification, learners could also apply for L2 apprenticeships in the related field. Employment options after achievement include assistant coaching roles and customer facing roles in the industry.
