Summary

Our Level 2 course explores the exciting, expansive, and rapidly changing world of computer games design. As a student, you will cover a broad range of subjects to give you a grounding in the core skills needed to work in this sector with the potential of moving onto a Level 3 course.
The final project is designed to simulate the pressures and excitement of working as a professional games designer. We aim to simulate the atmosphere and expectations a learner will find within employment in the working world.

On the course, you will be taken through a process in which you learn about the computer games industry, the audiences and products of the sector, and how to create simple computer games. Units that you will study include:

• Research and development techniques
• Production and development of concept and digital art
• Audio production and editing
• Fundamentals of programming
• Design and develop your own 2D computer games.

This Level 2 course is based at our Filton campus, located in South Gloucestershire which is easily accessible from the city of Bristol by train (Bristol Parkway / Bristol Abbey Wood) and bus. As well as our Stroud campus in the centre of Gloucestershire, surrounded by the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The campus is a short walk from Stroud train station and easily accessible by bus.

How will I know how I am doing?

Learners receive feedback on all their work via our online virtual learning environment, assessment sheets, and 1-2-1 tutorials.

What do I need to join?

Four GCSEs at grade 3 (D) or above, with English and maths being desirable or a relevant Level 1 qualification. We also expect to see a portfolio of art or games design ideas at your interview and you may be asked to write a short review of a computer game you have played.

Maths & English

A key requirement to obtaining many jobs is achieving a good standard of English and Maths. Therefore, learners that do not yet have a GCSE grade 4 (grade C) will be enrolled on either GCSE or Functional Skills programmes alongside their main course.

Employability

The UK has the biggest game developer base in Europe. Video games are more popular than ever before, played by people of all ages. Learners on the level 2 programme will develop skills in communication, presentation and writing as well as teamwork and creative thinking, in addition to the skills relating to specific aspects of study e.g. animation, concept art, digital graphics, etc.

Work Experience

The end of course project is designed to simulate the pressures and excitement of working as a professional games designer. We aim to simulate as closely as possible the atmosphere and expectations a learner will find when they leave us and find employment in the working world.

What can I do next?

Successful leaners can progress to study Level 3 Computer Games Design or onto other courses at Level 3. High achieving learners may find entry level employment in the industry.

What are my career options?

Learners may ultimately wish to pursue careers in games design. The course is also a good grounding for all kinds of multimedia and media career paths. Communication, confidence, creative thinking and teamwork are all skills developed on the course that are transferable to a broad range of employment opportunities.
