A TECHNICAL LEVEL 2 QUALIFICATION THAT EMBEDS ADDITIONAL ADVANCED ELEMENTS THAT PREPARE YOU FOR A LEVEL 3 QUALICATION.
If you want to prepare for a technical career working with animals then this course will lay the foundations for your next steps. The study programme will provide you with the technical knowledge and skills required to continue your studies on the level 3 T-Level in Animal Management and Behaviour. It is also a valuable route for mature learners (aged 19+), who do not have the option to undertake the T-Level, providing you with the necessary knowledge and skillset to begin a career in the animal industry.
You will study animal health and welfare, biology, animal feeding and accommodation, animal behaviour, work experience, business management and industry-related health and safety. You will undertake practical sessions in our purpose-built Animal Education Centre and develop important technical skills for working in the animal industry. At the end of the study programme you will achieve a Level 2 Technical Diploma in Animal Care as well as an internal certificate for upskilling and supervisory skills in the animal sector.
This course is based at our Filton campus, located in South Gloucestershire which is easily accessible from the city of Bristol by train (Bristol Parkway / Bristol Abbey Wood) and bus.
As part of the study programme you will undertake a minimum of 150 hours of industry related work placement that links to your long-term career goals. You will be supported by your tutor and work placement coach in finding a work placement but will ultimately be responsible for securing your own placement. Popular choices include animal boarding establishments, dog grooming salons, farm parks and veterinary centres.
As well as having a keen interest in the natural world and animal management, you will need to possess a minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including science, English and maths.
Learners will need to be committed, punctual and demonstrate an enthusiasm for learning and taking on new ideas and skills.
Following your application, you will be invited to attend a taster session and an interview. These are essential steps in the admissions process and are required to secure an offer of a place on the course, ensuring the programme is the right fit for your interests and aspirations.
Upon successful completion of this study programme, you will be well-prepared to progress onto the T Level in Animal Management and Behaviour, which is the intended next step for learners seeking advanced skills and qualifications in the sector. While it is possible to enter the animal industry directly from this course, progressing to the T Level will better equip you for long-term career development and higher-level roles. Learners may also secure entry-level positions or apprenticeships in settings such as zoological collections, farm parks, animal boarding establishments, and dog grooming salons. Mature learners will be encouraged to consider Access to HE courses as a route into Higher Education. Throughout your time at SGS, you will have access to careers advice and guidance from our experienced Careers Advisors and Work Coaches to support your next steps.
