This Apprenticeship develops highly skilled painters and decorators capable of delivering professional finishes across domestic, commercial and heritage projects. Apprentices gain experience in a wide range of techniques, including painting, spraying, wallpapering and decorative finishes, while learning to prepare surfaces and work safely with specialist materials.

Designed for both employers and apprentices, the programme builds technical expertise alongside creativity, problem-solving and strong client communication skills. Apprentices will learn to interpret requirements, advise on colours and materials, and consistently deliver high-quality results.

Completion of this apprenticeship opens up a wide range of career opportunities across the construction industry. Apprentices can progress into roles such as Advanced craft painter and decorator Site supervisor or team leader and Specialist finisher (e.g. heritage, decorative, or spray applications).

With experience, individuals may move into Contract or site management roles, Estimating and project planning also running their own painting and decorating business. There are also opportunities to specialise in high-end decorative work, heritage restoration, or commercial contracts. For those wishing to continue their development, progression into higher-level construction qualifications or related management training is available, supporting long-term career growth within the industry.

Entry requirements

This Apprenticeship requires learners to achieve maths and English level 2 or equivalent. English and maths qualifications must be completed in line with the apprenticeship funding rules.
