Four SGS College students were recognised at this year's Bristol Young Heroes Awards, with two students taking home awards at a special celebration held at the Delta Hotel by Marriott in Bristol.

Organised annually by Community of Purpose and sponsored by UWE Bristol, the awards celebrate young people from across Bristol who have overcome challenges, supported others and made a positive difference in their communities.

The event brought together hundreds of guests to celebrate the achievements of young people whose stories demonstrate resilience, compassion and determination.

Deon Johnson wins Superhero Award

SGS student Deon Johnson was named Superhero Award winner in recognition of his outstanding commitment to supporting others.

As part of his work experience, Deon has spent the past two years volunteering at The Heathers Nursing Home in Chipping Sodbury. In his first year alone, he completed more than 200 voluntary hours, demonstrating his genuine passion for caring for others and making a positive difference to the lives of residents.

Sue Downes, Health and Social Care Tutor at SGS College, said:

"Deon is one of the kindest, gentlest and most compassionate people I have ever known. He always goes above expectations because he genuinely cares about people. He is the person who will naturally gravitate towards those who need help."

Speaking after receiving the award, Deon said:

"I am so happy to be here today. I didn’t expect to be here. I just want to say a huge thank you to The Heathers Nursing Home. They got me to where I am today and helped me achieve so much. I also want to thank my parents and everyone who has supported me. Thank you so much."

Jacob Court-Chandler named Learning Hero

SGS student Jacob Court-Chandler received the Learning Hero Award for his dedication to Maths and English alongside his Level 2 Diploma in Sports Coaching.

Jacob's commitment to learning, exemplary attendance and determination to improve have made him a deserving recipient of the award. Alongside his studies, Jacob is passionate about creative writing and continues to demonstrate the same dedication through his commitment to football.

Amy Atkinson, SGS English College Tutor and Learning Area Manager, said:

"Jacob has really built on his resilience and uses feedback effectively to improve his work. His attendance is exemplary and his attitude to learning makes him a pleasure to teach. He is passionate about creative writing and puts these skills into his classroom learning."

When asked what advice he would give to another young person facing challenges in education, Jacob said:

"The one thing I keep saying is keep moving. Even if it’s hard. I have been through hard times and I would suggest just keep moving because one day it will show."

Celebrating all our finalists

Two further SGS College students were also recognised as finalists.

SGS Sport student Isla Law was shortlisted for her achievements on and off the football pitch. Alongside continuing her studies, Isla has represented England Under-17s, attended national training camps and represented her country internationally. She also reached another significant milestone this year when she made her debut for Bristol City Women.

A student from SGS College's Health and Social Care provision was also recognised as a finalist in the Learning Hero category for her dedication, motivation and remarkable personal transformation since starting her course.

The success of Deon, Jacob and our two finalists highlights the talent, determination and commitment of students across the College.

Everyone at SGS College congratulates Deon, Jacob, Isla and all of this year's Bristol Young Heroes Awards finalists on their well-deserved recognition and outstanding achievements.
