SGS College’s Chief Executive Officer and Principal, David Withey, joined Claire Hazelgrove MP on Saturday 11 July for a community discussion exploring how organisations can work together to improve opportunities for young people across the region.
Hosted as part of Claire Hazelgrove MP’s ‘Coffee with Claire’ series, the event brought together educators, employers, parents, youth organisations and members of the local community to discuss the challenges facing young people and how partnership working can support them into education, employment and training.
The discussion explored the findings of the Government-commissioned Milburn Report, alongside the support already available locally and ideas for creating even more opportunities for young people to thrive.
David shared insights into SGS College’s work supporting students through further education, apprenticeships, higher education and employer partnerships, highlighting the vital role colleges play in helping young people develop the skills, confidence and qualifications needed for future success.

David Withey, Chief Executive Officer and Principal at SGS College, said:
“Supporting young people to achieve their ambitions is at the heart of everything we do at SGS College. It was great to be part of such an open and positive discussion about the challenges young people face and, more importantly, the practical steps we can take together to help them succeed. Working collaboratively is key to creating opportunities that make a real difference.”
Claire Hazelgrove MP welcomed attendees and encouraged an open discussion, with feedback from the event helping to inform ongoing work with Government ministers and the Department for Work and Pensions.
The event highlighted the importance of collaboration between education providers, employers, community organisations and local representatives in helping young people access the support, skills and opportunities they need to succeed.
