SGS is delighted to welcome Katie Northwood as the recipient of this prestigious studentship. Alongside her research, Katie will join SGS's Sports Academy as a Strength and Conditioning Coach, contributing to the development of athletes across multiple sports disciplines.

Katie’s research will be conducted in collaboration with the University of Gloucestershire (UoG), aiming to explore neck strength as a modifiable risk factor for concussion. The study will focus on student-athletes at SGS, with the goal of enhancing both understanding and prevention of concussion in sport. The project will be supervised by Dr. Craig Barden (SGS and UoG) and Dr. Hayley Legg (UoG), both experts in sports science and athlete welfare. This collaboration reflects SGS’s ongoing commitment to advancing student safety, performance, and overall well-being.

In her dual role, Katie will lead the strength and conditioning provision for the Netball and Female Football academies at SGS. She will also support the broader Strength and Conditioning (S&C) team in providing high-quality training programs across various academies. Her expertise will be instrumental in fostering a culture of excellence within SGS’s Sports Academy, ensuring athletes receive cutting-edge training and support.

Dr. Craig Barden commented:
“We are thrilled to have Katie join SGS and contribute to this vital research. Understanding the role of neck strength in mitigating concussion risk could have a significant impact on athlete welfare, not only at SGS but in the wider sporting community.”

This project further reinforces SGS’s dedication to enhancing the safety and performance of student-athletes through innovative research and high-level coaching.
