SGS College’s ESOL Team has won a 2025 Silver Award and is now shortlisted for Gold for their outstanding support of learners.

The ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Team at South Gloucestershire and Stroud (SGS) College has been recognised with a Silver Award for Further Education Team of the Year in the 2025 Pearson National Teaching Awards. Selected from thousands of nominees across the UK, the team is now in the running for the coveted Gold Award, to be announced later this year at a prestigious London ceremony and featured on BBC One's The One Show.

Sarah Kopera, Head of SGS Life, said:

"Winning Silver and now being shortlisted for Gold reflects the hard work and commitment of our team and the wider group of colleagues who've supported us. Our staff do more than teach — they mentor, encourage, and create safe, welcoming spaces where learners can grow in confidence. Our learners arrive with so much potential; we just help them shape their voices in English so they can share their stories and move forward with confidence."

SGS College is one of just 94 individuals and institutions nationwide recognised with a Silver Award this year for their lasting impact on young people's lives.

The announcement coincides with National Thank a Teacher Day, a UK-wide celebration of the educators and support staff who go above and beyond every day. The Pearson National Teaching Awards and Thank a Teacher Day are organised by the Teaching Awards Trust, an independent charity that has celebrated excellence in education for over 25 years.

Sir Michael Morpurgo, author, former Children's Laureate and President of the Teaching Awards Trust, said:

"The dedication and impact of those involved in educating young people is truly remarkable. Their influence extends well beyond the classroom — offering encouragement, inspiration, and unwavering support that can shape lives for years to come. That's why National Thank a Teacher Day is an important opportunity to pause and celebrate all that they do."

Sharon Hague, CEO of Pearson UK, added:

"Every day, educators across the UK go above and beyond to inspire, support, and shape the future generation. Today, we proudly recognise those making an extraordinary impact. Our Silver Award winners represent the very best of the profession, and we're thrilled to celebrate their dedication and achievements. Congratulations to all of this year's winners."

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson also praised the winners:

"Brilliant teachers make the single biggest difference to a child's education. They don't just deliver lessons - they transform lives, inspire curiosity, and build the confidence our children need to succeed. For this incredible commitment to our nation's future, we owe our teachers our deepest gratitude."
